What is Music Minus One?

Music Minus One is a simple concept. It is simply a standard music recording which is played with one part missing. The idea is that you as a performer supply the missing part and play (or sing) along with the recording, hence the term "music minus one". Music Publisher is ideal to create music minus one playback as it gives you the ability to create recordings directly from printed music using your scanner.

An example might be a string quartet with the cello part missing, which allows you to practice your cello playing as you play along with the quartet. It could also be a song with only the accompaniment provided, so that you have to provide the vocals. This form of Music Minus One is better known as a Karaoke track!

Music Publisher Scanning edition can produce Music Minus One samples. Using this edition you scan the music you want to use for Music Minus One into Music Publisher and then use one of this software's standard playback features to silence one or more of the staves as you play the music. Alternatively, you can produce a standard midi file from Music Publisher and then use other midi software such as the free Vkaraoke to do this silencing interactively.

Some Music Publisher customers create midi files of the music to use with Vkaraoke to help choir members learn their parts. This enables the learner to hear his or her own choral part isolated and then practice with that part inserted or even silenced.

Music Publisher is full-featured music notation software and music editing software. To read more about this product and optionally download an evaluation copy, click here.
